It depends on a few factors. The size and MERV rating of the filter, as well as the location of the filter, will determine how frequently it needs to be replaced. A basic one inch filter in a ceiling return grill should be replaced every three months. A six inch filter can last up to 6 months. The higher the MERV rating, the more frequently it will need to be replaced. If your air handler has an open return in a closet, filters will need to be replaced monthly as they tend to pickup more debris and particulates from the floor and closet space.
